Why Tithe
The term 'tithe' is a popular piece of Christianese, but what does it really mean?
The word 'tithe' literally means 'tenth', and thus the giving of the tithe is the giving of a tenth of one's total income to God through the local church.
The practice of tithing goes all the way back to Abraham. In Genesis 14:20, the bible tells us that Abraham gave a tenth of all he had to Melchezideck, priest of God Most High. In Leviticus 27:30, God commanded every Israelite to give a tenth of everything they possessed ; "everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees," to the Lord. "It is holy to the Lord" (Lev. 27:30). This offering was to be given to the priests for the work of the Lord. The prophet Malachi states it even more succinctly: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house" (Malachi 3:10a).
Today the bringing of the whole tithe to God means giving an offering of a tenth of all that we possess to God each month. This means giving a full tenth of your gross (not net: God comes first, not Uncle Sam!) monthly income to God for the work of his house. Faithful tithers tithe not only on their monthly income, but on all additional income that they receive.
This is not an obligation, it is a privilege! Through the mouth of the prophet Malachi, God attaches a promise to this command: "Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it" (Malachi 3:10b). This is the only place in the Bible where God invites anyone to test him.
In essence, tithing is an act of faith. Giving the tithe to God is a declaration that your finances belong to him, and that you trust him to meet all of your needs according to his riches in glory. When we walk in this kind of faith, God responds with blessing and breakthrough!
The Offering
There is a difference between a tithe and an offering. The giving of the tithe is the foundational financial requirement of Scripture that manifests faith and thankfulness to God for his provision. The offering is a spontaneous freewill gift that flows out of the desire of the believer to go above and beyond obligation in support of the ministry of God's house.
In Exodus 25:2, God says to Moses, "Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give." Then in verse 8 he explains why: "Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them." Fos even specified the type of offering he was looking for: gold, silver, bronze, yarn, leather, wood, oil, spice, and incense. The offering was to be used for the beautification of the house of God. When Moses gave the people this instruction from the Lord, the response was so tremendous that the need was met almost immediately. There was such abundance that he had to tell the people to stop because they had received more than enough!
While the tithe is used for the care of God's house, offerings are typically used to enhance the ministries of the house so that the praises of God are made glorious! The tithe provides the basic needs of the church and its leaders. The offering enhances the work of the Lord and extends the reach of the ministries of the house so that more people are touched and healed by God's power!
The article below explains in more detail the power of the offering to release you into a new level of God's provision in time of need.
